Gender in the Belfry: A Trans and GNC Batclan Fanzine!

We are in no way affiliated with DC Comics, we are an independant project by fans for fans! Please do not hesitate to reach out via social media or email if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

This is our Q&A page. Our guidelines for the zine can be found on our info doc. Please be sure to read both thoroughly if you plan on applying to the zine!

Q&A

Q: What are the contributor/applicant guidelines for this project?A: For guidelines on general contribution/applications, artist guidelines, and writer guidelines, please click the Info Doc button just above, and it will take you immediately to the relevant information!

Q: Will shipping be allowed?A: Yes! We will be allowing shipping, both canon and fanon, in this zine. The only hard limits we are asking for are no ships between adults and minors, and no ships between blood related characters. Our contributor focused mods are not comfortable moderating that type of content, all other ships will be considered on a case by case basis.
Writing and Art would still need to focus on Transqueer themes.

Q: What is the rating for this zine?A: The main zine will be rated Teen, canon typical violence will be allowed, and depending on the interest check, we may have a second, digital only side zine with Mature content!

Q: Are there any off limits gender based headcanons?A: While we want to celebrate the variance of gendered experiences, we do not allow identities based on transitioning to another race, species, disability, or age. This is to facilitate a safe environment for everyone, and mod comfort.

Q: What format will this be? What are the specs?A: We are planning on this being a physical and digital project, with physical and digital book and merchandise bundle options. Specs are to be determined.

Q: Will other characters not under the Bat brand be allowed to be depicted?A: Yes! The Batclan is shorthand for the vigilantes who operate within Gotham's networks. The 'Bat' part is in reference to the 'bats' who take up most of the attention, but is not exclusive to them. We have a more in depth explanation in our info doc.

Q: Where will zine profits go?A: This is a partial-profit zine, meaning that profits will go towards contributors receiving copies of the zine, with any leftover profits being donated to a Transgender Legal Charity decided by our contributors and mods.
More details are included in our info doc.

Q: Will Omegaverse content be allowed in this project? Will intersex interpretations of characters be allowed in this project?A: These questions share a conjoined answer! No, Omegaverse will not be allowed in this project, we are confident there are plenty of other Omegaverse related zines and fandom projects, this is simply not the place.Yes, intersex interpretations of characters are allowed, welcome, and encouraged! This answer is conjoined because it all hinges on one thing; dualsex characters. While we are aware many people are not familiar with the true nature of intersex conditions, we aim to provide a space that is inclusive and free of discriminatory depictions of real life things, such as intersexuality. For a brief introduction on How to Write Intersex Characters with Grace, please follow the link directly below this segment to a post written by an intersex blogger. For an even more brief explanation, there is a trend in fandom (not exclusive to DC by any means) where people misinterpret what intersexuality really is, and use dualsex as a substitute, dualsex being when a character has both a fully formed and functioning penis and vagina, which is not an intersex variation humans are born with, nor is it in any way indicative of a character being transgender or voluntarily gender non-conforming. This is present in both Omegaverse and non-Omegaverse works, and we aim to keep this trend away from our project.A short blurb from that post, one that is highly relevant to the topic at hand:
"Understand the differences (and overlap) between anatomy and gender identity. Anatomy does not cause or explain gender identity. Some intersex people might also be transgender and/or nonbinary, but many are not. Intersex characters are not inherently transgender or nonbinary because of their anatomical differences. Suggesting that anatomy or brain differences “cause” gender identity is a problem for both intersex and transgender people."
If you yourself are intersex, or are perisex with an intention to portray an intersex headcanon with grace and a willingness to be respectful, we highly encourage you to submit pitches with intersex characters when the time comes!A final note, however, we are fully accepting of characters who have specifically transitioned to have both a penis and vagina, such as characters with vagina preserving phalloplasty, or penile preserving vaginoplasty.
